Saturday Stuff: January 25th 2024

Happy Saturday! Here’s some stuff I’m checking out this weekend:

#1

A quick one -

Jensen Huang's career experience via LinkedIn: so awesome.

BTW - if you want the full deep-dive into NVIDIA, the Acquired podcast is great.

#2

This long-form piece on the history of Railroad Tycoon 2, a PC game released in 1998, was one of my favorite reads of the last two weeks.

It covers the context of strategy games in 1998, the computer and gaming industry, and why the author places it in his pantheon of great PC games.

This is fascinating to me!

As a self-taught dev, I learned to code via reading open-source code on GitHub in 2012-2013. It’s amazing that a decade later, students still aren’t learning GitHub, deep into their curriculum.

#4

Lightpage is a new AI-powered note taking app.

I’m watching this new genre of notebook apps, which augment the standard workflow with LLM text generation — in particular, if any of these apps can crack the concept of “I take notes with an AI” instead of “I take notes and the AI produces a lot of analogous junk” — that’s pretty interesting.

Raycast is an excellent launcher for macOS (Windows release is coming fairly soon, I think). It’s interesting to see them expand in new directions over the last couple years. Focus is a way to block distracting apps and websites from the Raycast launcher. Cool idea!
